02DEC The SAS HERMES ground datalink system began providing limited ACARS services to Braathens 01DEC. Acars-Loadsheet, Notoc and Freetext messages are supported initially. Passenger connections (TRIN) will be opened up shortly. The available Acars services are limted with respect to the different avionics installed in the Braathens fleet.
Initial SAS HERMES services for SPANAIR became operational earlier this week.
The SAS Airbus fleets have now all been updated with AOC SAS-H3 -503.

ARINC has activated a new ACARS ground stations at TFS/GCTS Tenerife-Sur, Canary Islands, Spain. See Ground Stations.

24NOV SPANAIR is a new user of the SAS HERMES Datalink Ground Datalink System. Spanair's fleet of Airbus A320-series aircraft will be supported by the SAS HERMES system and associated ACARS applications. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
ARINC has activated a new ACARS ground stations at LPA/GCLP Las Palmas, Canary Islands, Spain. See Ground Stations.
01NOV

MD-80 OY-KGT has been equipped with a new Mini-ACMS function, embedded as an application on the Rockwell-Collins DLM-900 ACARS MU. The Mini-ACMS function is planned to be installed on all SAS MD-80s. It provides ACMS data without need to install dedicated ACMS hardware.
B737 LN-RPS has been upgraded with VDL-2 avionics and AOA Core sw. It is planned to be loaded with Link2000/CPDLC sw later.

14OCT B737s SE-DNT and SE-DNU have been upgraded with VDL-2 avionics and AOA Core sw. Both are planned to be loaded with Link2000/CPDLC sw later.
Additional Q400s have been updated with the Unilink UL-700 ACARS, See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
04OCT

The first MD-80 installation of VDL-2 datalink has been completed in OY-KHM. The aircraft was test flown ARN-CPH on Friday 01OCT. Photo of the test flight crew.

30SEP B737 OY-KKG has been upgraded with VDL-2 datalink and Link2000 CPDLC capability. This brings the number of CPDLC B737s to 12.
The first MD-80 OY-KHM is being upgraded with VDL-2 datalink this week. VDL-2 is the next-generation datalink after ACARS. Aircraft with VDL-2 are bilingual ie they use either ACARS or VDL-2 depending on local coverage. The MD-80/90 fleet is not getting the additional Link2000 CPDLC capability at this time. 27SEP

B737 LN-RPY and LN-RPW have been upgraded with VDL-2 and AOA Core sw. Both are planned to receive Link2000/CPDLC software soon.
Additional Q400s have been updated with the Unilink UL-700 ACARS, See SAS Aircraft Fleet.

16SEP Updated the page on the Link2000 CPDLC program. There is now a list of the SAS  aircraft equipped with CPDLC.

B737 LN-RRP has been upgraded with VDL-2 and Link2000 CPDLC capability. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.

02SEP B737 LN-RPG has been upgraded with VDL-2 and Link2000 CPDLC capability. This brings the Link2000 fleet to 10 airplanes. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
ARINC changed its European base frequency to 131.825 on 31AUG.
25AUG

B737-883 SE-DTR Saga Viking was delivered BFI-ARN on 25 Aug. She is equipped with a Collins CMU-900 -151 with VDL-2 capability. See SAS Aircraft Fleet and Avionics.

23AUG B737s LN-RCT and LN-RRU have been upgraded with VDL-2 and Link2000 CPDLC capability. This brings the Link2000 fleet to 8 airplanes.
Q400 LN-RDA and LN-RDB have been equipped with the Unilink UL-700 ACARS. This brings the Unilink fleet to 12 airplanes.

04AUG

B737 LN-RRO has been upgraded with VDL-2 and Link2000 CPDLC capability.
Additional Dash-8-Q400s have been equipped with the Unilink UL-700 ACARS. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
Updated the Ground Stations list with new charter destinations.

29JUL A brand new B737-883 SE-DTR Saga Viking is due for delivery BFI-ARN on 18 Aug. She is equipped with a Collins CMU-900 -151 with VDL-2/AOA capability. See SAS Aircraft Fleet and Avionics.
Update of the in-service B737NG, MD-80 and MD-90 fleets with ACARS Core 7.2 is in progress. About 60% of the fleet completed to date. It is required to support ARINC Europe 131.825.
The Dash-8-Q400 fleet with Unilink UL-700 ACARS has increased to 9 airplanes. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
14JUL

B737 OY-KKH has been upgraded with VDL-2 and Link2000 CPDLC capability.
The Airbus A321 and A330/340 fleets have been updated to support ARINC Europe 131.825.
The Dash-8-Q400 fleet with Honeywell Mk 2 CMUs has been updated with AOC H1-512 to support ARINC Europe 131.825.
The Blue 1 Avro RJ fleet has been updated with AOC H2-507 to support ARINC Europe 131.825.
Updated the D-ATIS page. D-ATIS trial started in BRU.
Updated the PDC/DCL page. DCL available at Hamburg and under test at Bremen.
Updated and edited the Ground Stations list.

Updated the Ground Stations list: New SITA stations at DTM/EDLW Dortmund, Germany, ETZ/LFJL Metz, France, BGY/LIME Bergamo, Italy, MOL/ENML Molde, Norway, KSU/ENKB Kristiansund, Norway, IBZ/LEIB Ibiza, Spain, VGO/LEVX Vigo, Spain and OVD/LEAS Asturias, Spain. Other minor changes.
B737-600 ex-OY-KKY has been returned from lease to Air Europa and is now registered SE-DOT.

11MAY Two further Q400s have been updated with Unilink UL-700 ACARS. OY-KCD and OY-KCF. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.
05MAY

A "No ACARS" uplink advisory from HERMES has been added. It is sent to the cockpit at Initialization if the Destination or an Alternate airports do not have ACARS ground coverage.
A Landing Pilot selection is available on aircraft with AOC 5B (all B737 and MD80/90) on the INIT DATA  page.
Departure Clearance DCL is available at Hamburg HAM/EDDH,
D-ATIS is available for Amsterdam AMS/EHAM.
B737-600 ex-OY-KKE has been returned from lease to Air Europa and is now  registered SE-DOR.

29APR Four B737 aircraft have so far been upgraded with Link2000 CPDLC capability over VDL-2/ATN in European airspace (Maastricht). They are: LN-RRX, LN-RRY, LN-RRZ and LN-RPU. The plan is to have 20 equipped aircraft by the end of 2004.
Installation of AOC 4B in the MD80/90 fleet is completed.
27MAR

ARINC has re-deployed its ground station to SFT/ESNS Skellefteå, Sweden to support re-opening of SAS service from 28 March 2004. See the Ground Stations page.
Installation of AOC 4B in the MD80/90 fleet is progressing well. Some 10+ aircraft remaining. See SAS Aircraft Fleet.

23MAR Universal Avionics Unilink UL-700 ACARS equipment is being introduced on the SAS Commuter Dash-8-Q400 fleet. The first aircraft is OY-KCE recently delivered from the Exeter, UK, modification center. See SAS Aircraft Fleet and the Q400 ACARS equipment overview.
ARINC deployed new ground stations to ALC/LEAL Alicante, Spain and CFU/LGKR Corfu-Kerkira, Greece. See the Ground Stations page.
10MAR

Added a new page with some background information on Link2000 CPDLC.
Installation of AOC-4B is completed in the B737 fleet and has started on the MD80/90 fleet. See current status under SAS Aircraft Fleet.

25FEB B737-600 LN-RRY has been upgraded with VDL-2 AOA/ATN and CPDLC capability. It is the 2nd SAS B737NG aircraft with CPDLC and the 3rd with VDL-2.
Eurocontrol Link 2000 CPDLC operations are scheduled to begin March-04, initially in the Maastricht UAC sector.
Updated SAS Aircraft Fleet regarding B767-300ERs leased to Air Holland, B737-800s leased to AirOne, B737-600s leased to Air Europa and B737-800s sold to Hainan Airlines (China).
Updated the D-ATIS page.
North Atlantic FANS Phase 3 operations started Dec-2003 meaning that additional FANS-CPDLC messages are now used operationally. Iceland plans to start FANS operations in April 2004. See also FANS-ADS.

Ground stations page updated with ACARS-coverage info for OLB, VDB.

31JAN Updated the Ground Stations page. SAS Acars Loadsheet is now available in DUB, GVA, TFS and ZRH.
Updated the AOC Overview page.
Added descriptions for AOC 5B and AOC 4B.
AOC 4B (ACARS) and AOC 5B (AOA/ATN) have been released. They are functionally equivalent but compatible with different platforms. Installation of AOC 5B started Dec-03. See News 19DEC2003. Installation of AOC 4B is expected to start Feb-Mar 2004.
22JAN Updated the Ground Stations page with coverage information for AGA. FNC, SHH, MIR, PDL.
Updated the SAS Aircraft Fleet page. AOC C4A is now installed in most B737, MD80 and MD90 aircraft.
Updated the Applications page.
Landing pilot reporting is introduced with AOC C5B/C4B and in parallel an enhancement to the interim landing report system has been implemented.
SAS' 4th Airbus A330 SE-REF Erik Viking is due for delivery from TLS in January.
01JAN2004 Happy New Datalink Year 2004!
Looking back, 2003 was quite a productive year for SAS Datalink. A number of goals/milestones were achieved, including:
- SAS joined the Eurocontrol Link2000 program (CPDLC in European airspace)
- Decision to upgrade Collins-fleet to VDL-2 AOA capability
- SAS started FANS-CPDLC operations in North Atlantic airspace (A330/A340)
- ACARS Landing Data Calculation LDC application implemented for B737NG
- ACARS TODC implemented for A330, MD90 and Q400
- Hermes 6 ground system into production
- Preliminary Load Info implemented
- Airbus ATSU upgraded to CSB2.2B, CLR3.6B and common SAS AOC database
- Collins DLM/CMU-900 upgraded to Core 7.1, AOC C3H and C4A
- Certification of CMU-900 with VDL-2/AOA and ATN-CPDLC (Link2000) capability on B737NG
19DEC2003 The 1st installation and certification of VDL-2 with AOA, ATN and LINK2000 CPDLC was achieved on SAS' B737-600 LN-RRZ on Thursday 18DEC2003 after a 100% successful test flight. SAS will upgrade the B737, MD80 and MD90 fleets to VDL-2 AOA. Twenty B737s will additionally get ATN capability for operational use of CPDLC in the Eurocontrol LINK 2000 program

The Ground Stations page has been updated. A new ACARS ground station have been deployed by ARINC at Innsbruck, Austria (INN/LOWI).
